BBC News | July 23, 2019 – Boris Johnson has been elected new Conservative leader in a ballot of party members and will become the next UK prime minister.
He beat Jeremy Hunt comfortably, winning 92,153 votes to his rival’s 46,656.
The former London mayor takes over from Theresa May on Wednesday.
In his victory speech, Mr Johnson promised he would “deliver Brexit, unite the country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn”.
Speaking at the Queen Elizabeth II centre in London, he said: “We are going to energise the country.
“We are going to get Brexit done on 31 October and take advantage of all the opportunities it will bring with a new spirit of can do.
“We are once again going to believe in ourselves, and like some slumbering giant we are going to rise and ping off the guy ropes of self doubt and negativity.”
Mr Johnson thanked his predecessor, saying it had been “a privilege to serve in her cabinet”. He was Mrs May’s foreign secretary until resigning over Brexit.
The outgoing PM – who is standing down after a revolt by Conservative MPs over her Brexit policy – congratulated her successor, promising him her “full support from the backbenches”.
Foreign Secretary Mr Hunt said he was “very disappointed”, but Mr Johnson would do “a great job”. He said he had “total, unshakeable confidence in our country” and that was a valuable quality at such a challenging time.
Mr Hunt added: “It was always going to be uphill for us because I was someone who voted Remain and I think lots of party members felt that this was a moment when you just had to have someone who voted for Brexit in the referendum.
“In retrospect, that was a hurdle we were never able to overcome.”
Donald Trump told an event in Washington “a really good man is going to be the prime minister of the UK now,” and Mr Johnson would “get it done”, referring to Brexit.
The president added: “They call him Britain Trump. That’s a good thing.”
Almost 160,000 Conservative members were eligible to vote in the contest and turnout was 87.4%.
Mr Johnson’s share of the vote – 66.4% – was slightly lower than that garnered by David Cameron in the 2005 Tory leadership election (67.6%).
The former London mayor and ex-foreign secretary spoke to staff at Conservative Party HQ after his victory was announced.
He was then given a rousing reception by Tory MPs at a meeting in Parliament, where he urged them to “unite, unite, unite and win”.
The BBC’s Nick Eardley, who was outside the room, said such gatherings had been gloomy and downbeat for many months, but this one was full of laughter.
One MP told our correspondent: “The BoJo show is up and running.” Another said: “The cloud has been lifted.”
Resignations
Mr Johnson will begin announcing his new cabinet on Wednesday, but it has already been confirmed that Mark Spencer, MP for Sherwood in Nottinghamshire, will become chief whip – the person responsible for enforcing party discipline in the Commons.
A number of senior figures have already said they will not serve under Mr Johnson, though, citing their opposition to his stance on Brexit.
He has pledged the UK will leave the EU on 31 October “do or die”, accepting that a no-deal exit will happen if a new agreement cannot be reached by then.
Education Minister Anne Milton tweeted her resignation just half an hour before the leadership result was due to be revealed, insisting the UK “must leave the EU in a responsible manner”.
And International Development Secretary Rory Stewart confirmed he would be returning to the backbenches, where he would be spending more time “serving Cumbria” and “walking”.
David Gauke, another vocal opponent of a no-deal Brexit, announced he was resigning as justice secretary.
They join the likes of Chancellor Philip Hammond, Foreign Office minister Sir Alan Duncan and Culture Minister Margot James who have all said they disagree too strongly with Mr Johnson’s Brexit strategy to work closely with him.
Boris Johnson will become our next prime minister.
A sentence that might thrill you. A sentence that might horrify you. A sentence that 12 months ago even his most die-hard fans would have found hard to believe.
But it’s not a sentence, unusually maybe for politics, that won’t bother you either way.
Because whatever you think of Boris Johnson, he is a politician that is hard to ignore.
With a personality, and perhaps an ego, of a scale that few of his colleagues can match. This is the man who even as a child wanted to be “world king”.
Now, he is the Tory king, and the Brexiteers are the court.
The EU Commission’s Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, said he was looking forward to working with Mr Johnson “to facilitate the ratification of the withdrawal agreement and achieve an orderly Brexit”.
The new Tory leader has previously said the agreement Mrs May reached with the EU was “dead”, having been rejected three times by MPs.
Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament’s chief Brexit co-ordinator, said the parliament would hold an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday in response to Mr Johnson’s election.
Jeremy Corbyn reacted to the result by tweeting that Mr Johnson had “won the support of fewer than 100,000 unrepresentative Conservative Party members”.
“The people of our country should decide who becomes the prime minister in a general election,” he added.
Speaking to the BBC later, Mr Corbyn said Labour planned to table a motion of no confidence in Mr Johnson. Asked when that would be, he replied: “It will be an interesting surprise for you all.”
What happens now?
Wednesday 12:00 BST onwards: Theresa May takes part in her last Prime Minister’s Questions. After lunch she will make a short farewell speech outside No. 10 before travelling to see the Queen to tender her resignation.
Boris Johnson will then arrive for an audience at Buckingham Palace where he will be invited to form a government.
After that he will make a speech in Downing Street before entering the building for the first time as prime minister.
Later, he will begin announcing his most senior cabinet appointments, such as chancellor, home secretary and foreign secretary, and will make and take his first calls from other world leaders.
Thursday: Mr Johnson is expected to make a statement to Parliament about his Brexit strategy and take questions from MPs. Parliament will break up for its summer recess later.
The new PM will also continue announcing his new cabinet.
Newly-elected Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson said Mr Johnson had “shown time and time again that he isn’t fit to be the prime minister of our country”.
First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon congratulated Mr Johnson, but said she had “profound concerns” about him becoming prime minister.
The new leader also received congratulations from Arlene Foster, the leader of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party, whose support has kept the Conservatives in government since the 2017 general election.
She said the pact – known as a confidence and supply agreement – continued and would be reviewed over the coming weeks “to explore the policy priorities of both parties”.
Leader of the Scottish Conservatives Ruth Davidson, who backed Mr Hunt in the campaign, also sent her congratulations, adding that the new PM had “an enormous task ahead of him”.
In the often divisive Brexit world of “them and us” it’s easy to forget that, beyond Brexit, EU leaders still see the UK as a close partner and ally. Today’s messages of congratulation to Boris Johnson from across Europe were a timely reminder.
Whatever happens with Brexit, France, Germany, Poland et al still very much hope to work closely with the UK on international issues like Russia sanctions, Iran, and human rights protection.
But EU leaders’ welcoming tone does not signal a willingness to accept whatever Prime Minister Johnson might demand in terms of changes to the Brexit deal.
He’s right when he says a no-deal Brexit is bad for Brussels, but he overestimates EU wiggle room. Amendments will only be forthcoming if EU leaders deem them workable and are convinced the new prime minister commands a majority in Parliament to get an agreement through once and for all.

ALJAZIIRA | July 24, 2019 – Washington, DC – An event in Washington, DC, on Tuesday, billed as the first national gathering of Muslims in politics in United States history, began with a resounding a rebuke of racism and Islamophobia emanating from the White House, and a call for Muslims to become beacons of civic participation.
The conference comes after more than a week of racist attacks on four minority congresswomen, including Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, the first two Muslim women in Congress.
Organised by the Muslim Caucus, the two-day Muslim Collective for Equitable Democracy 2019 was described by Ghazala Salam, the founder and president of the Muslim Caucus as an opportunity for Muslims to begin building stronger networks for political organising.
“We’re not a monolithic community, not a one-issue community,” said Salam at the start of the event.
Contending that the work of political and community organising in Muslim communities often take place in “silos”, Salam added, “we want to establish a national infrastructure for organising American Muslims.”
Though nominally a bipartisan conference meant to inspire political involvement from the Muslim American community, US President Donald Trump’s repeated legislative and rhetorical attacks on Muslim citizens and immigrants received intense focus from event speakers.
“There’s no sideline to be on because this is no game,” said Congresswoman Betty McCollum as she accepted a human rights award from the Muslim Caucus.
“As Muslims, you have been under attack since day one of this administration. We need to stand in solidarity and common purpose,” she said.
Ken Martin, the Chairman of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party, added that today’s Republican Party was no longer that of his father and grandfather but a party of “hate and intolerance” against which the Democratic Party needed to stand as a “bulwark”.
Nevertheless, the Muslim Caucus noted that although Republican Party officials – who were invited – were absent at the conference, the group would continue to reach out to them.
“You will see several Democrat elected officials,” said Muslim Caucus Vice President Zarina Barber, referring to Omar and New York City Mayor and Bill de Blasio, as well as US Senator Elizabeth Warren, who will participate via livestream.
“We wanted to let you know that we made every attempt to invite our Republican partners as well and because of scheduling conflicts they were unable to come; after the conference, we will attempt to reach out to them,” Barber said.
Standing with Omar
Omar, who spoke during the conference’s opening discussion on the effects of Islamophobia in civic and political discourse, was central to the conference’s discussions of racism and bias in the Trump administration.
Arriving shortly after the discussion began, Omar received a standing ovation from attendees. Most of the speakers that morning also declared their solidarity with the representative, who has become a target for the ire of Trump and his supporters, who at a recent rally in North Carolina chanted, “send her back”.
“When we are talking about the president, people will say his remarks are racist and forget the inherent racism that has always been part of him,” Omar said.
“We forget the system of oppression that continues to build and … vilify so many of us to almost eliminate our existence in many aspects of society,” she added. “At least for me, it’s not going to distract me, but I’m going to unmask it. If we don’t push people we’re going to be stuck here for another generation or two.”
Gold Star father Khizr Khan spoke directly to Omar during the morning’s panel on Islamophobia.
“The rally in North Carolina, was not representative of the United States, the rally at the airport in Minnesota was representative of the United States,” he said, referring to the crowds that welcomed Omar back to her home district last Thursday. “The majority in this nation stands even today.”
A wider platform
One clear aim of the conference was also to clarify that Muslim Americans should enter politics with the aim of being more than defenders of their faith.
“Muslims have been a part of this country from the very beginning,” said Salam as she opened the conference. “We live in this country. Education, healthcare, the economy are important to us.”
Omar was particularly adamant on this point. Responding angrily to an audience member’s question asking her to condemn female genital mutilation, Omar cited her long-standing public history of condemning the practice.
“I want to make sure that the next time someone is in an audience, they will ask the question they will ask of any politician and will not come with the accusation that we might support something that is so abhorrent, so evil, so vile,” she said.
“What we look for and what this whole conversation is about, is that not only do we have internalized fears about what we might believe but that we also don’t have assumptions about what our value basis might be because of where we might come from,” Omar added. “I would like not just for you but for everyone to know that if you want us to speak as politicians, then you treat us as such.”
Minnesota Attorney General Kieth Ellison, who was the first Muslim elected to Congress, said Muslim American legislators should pursue an agenda that includes calling for a Muslim day at each statehouse, voter tabling in Muslim community centres and persuading imams to celebrate political participation as a Muslim virtue.
“There is no universal unity,” he said. “To some, you are the problem. Find the people who agree with you; you need 50 percent of the people in the room and one more, then you’ve won.”
Female Community Influencers visiting Bishara and her children to talk about health issues. Thanks to their support, Bishara brought her children to the local hospital to receive vaccinations and treatment.
TroCaire Europe | by Bisharo | 24 July 2019 –The rates of maternal death and infant mortality in Somalia are among the highest in the world. To help combat this, Trócaire is working with local partners in Somalia on a new initiative which sees women supporting other women in their community to ensure everyone is accessing the vital health services they need.
Bishara Adan Hilowle, aged 30, lives in a small village in Luuq district in the south-west of Somalia. She is a mother of nine but sadly has lost three of her children to childhood illnesses. Despite living 3km away, she had never visited her local health centre. Dangerously, all of her children were delivered at home and they had no access to vaccinations.
Unfortunately this is all too common in Somalia. In Bishara’s village, she lives in severe poverty and like her children, she has never received any education. Her husband works away everyday as a labourer and so she has no one else to look after her other children when one is ill and needs medical care. As well as finding it difficult to travel there, women like Bishara are wary and unsure about going to hospital.
In Luuq district, a new initiative aims to change this. Female Community Influencers (FCIs) visit women in their own homes to offer health education, and to encourage women to visit a nearby health facility when necessary. Like Bishara, many women need more than one visit to convince them to attend.
Amina, one of the FCIs, says that it is vital that they do not give up on the women and they continue to visit them until the family are accessing the care they need.
“We understand that a behaviour cannot be changed in one sitting,” she said. “But we are trained to be persistent and follow up with mothers like Bishara until they visit the health facility. In some cases, we can even escort them there. We are proud to be able to support women in our community and help them to make healthy decisions.”
It took three visits to Bishara, and the use of Trócaire’s field ambulance to ensure she visited the hospital, but she was very happy and grateful when she did.
“I never thought it was this easy to get services at the facility,” said Bishara. Her newborn baby was vaccinated against TB and Polio, and one of her older children needed vitamin A as well as treatment for a skin condition that had affected his head.
“Thank you to these women who never gave up on me. They gave me this knowledge so that I was able to get my child protection against these diseases.”
As Bishara now knows how to now access the services, she no longer needs the use of Trócaire’s ambulance and is able to make her own way there.
“I will make sure my children will finish their vaccination schedules,” she added. A decision that will possibly save their lives.
Female Community Influencers’ Support
In just one month, the two local FCIs, Amina and Kafio, have visited 200 households, referring 23 women to the health facility, with all but one having now accessed the necessary services.
“We are very proud of the positive changes we have brought within a month,” says Kafio. “We have earned the respect of the community and we are now known as the Health Teachers.”
Trócaire has partnered with Population Services International (PSI) to pilot this ‘Mother to Mother’ project across a number of districts in Somalia and it has been very effective. In just two months, the programme has:
Reached 5,106 women and children
Referred 1,388 of these to various reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) services, where already over 65% have accessed the services
The project is part of PSI’s Somali Advocates for Health and Nutrition (SAHAN), supported by UK’s Department for International Development, DFID.
